Fixed: You’re no longer on a paid plan.Upgrade to get access. Asana

There is nothing quite like the panic of logging into your project management software only to find a giant, fullscreen lock icon blocking your dashboard.

You’re no longer on a paid plan This project uses custom fields which is a paid feature. Upgrade to get access.

If you recently signed up for a “free” Asana account, you likely didn’t realize they automatically rolled you into an Advanced Free Trial. The second that 14-day trial window closes, if you accidentally used a single custom field or premium feature, Asana locks down your entire project. Your data is effectively held hostage, human support is replaced by an unhelpful chatbot, and you are forced to either upgrade or lose your work.

If you are ready to ditch the paywall trap and move your workspace to a platform that won’t lock you out of your own data, ClickUp is the most seamless alternative.

Here is exactly how to use ClickUp’s built-in importer to rescue your projects and get back to work in minutes.

Step-by-Step: Moving from Asana to ClickUp

ClickUp features a native, cloud-to-cloud integration built specifically to drain your data out of Asana. As long as your account permissions are still active, this tool will copy your tasks over automatically.

Step 1: Fire Up ClickUp’s Importer

  1. Log into your ClickUp workspace.
  2. In the upper-left corner, click your Workspace avatar and select Settings.
  3. In the sidebar, scroll down and select Imports / Exports.
  4. Click the Asana logo under the “Import from apps” section.

Step 2: Authorize the Connection

  1. A popup window will appear asking you to log into your Asana account.
  2. Click Authorize to grant ClickUp permission to read your project data.

Step 3: Select Your Projects

  1. Select the specific Asana workspace where your project lives.
  2. ClickUp will populate a list of your projects. Select the boards you want to rescue (like your “App Factory” or product roadmaps).
  3. Choose whether you want to import them into a brand-new ClickUp Space or drop them into an existing one.

Step 4: Map Your Board Columns & Statuses

Asana organizes work by “Sections,” while ClickUp uses “Statuses.” ClickUp will ask you to match them up.

  • For example, you can cleanly map your Asana sections (To Do, In Progress, Done) directly into corresponding ClickUp task statuses so your Kanban board looks exactly the same.

Step 5: Map Your Team Members

Finally, match the email addresses of your Asana collaborators to your ClickUp users. If you are working with a business partner or co-founder, mapping their email ensures that all historical task assignments, comments, and responsibilities stay perfectly intact.

Click Confirm, and ClickUp will handle the rest in the background. You’ll get an email the second the import finishes.
