Solved: Google Classroom – We are sorry but you do not have access to Classroom

Google Classroom is now ever more used by teachers and students across the globe. Recently, I came across below error affecting a small number of users and interestingly no one had the solution for this after searching online extensively.

The error message users were getting on Google Classroom Android App was “We are sorry but you do not have access to Classroom. Please contact your domain administrator for access.” Being the domain administrator I have checked all settings and ensured Classroom service was turned on for the affected users and even allowed the Classroom Android app in G Suite. Despite all this Classroom was still not working and hours of searching online and checking all settings finally found the solution.

This is due to Google mobile device management policy being enabled by the Google Workspace Admin. To resolve this issue, try below solutions.

Solution 1:-(For users)

  1. Enable screen lock on your phone if you don’t have any screen lock(Swipe, PIN, Password, Pattern, Face, Fingerprint).
  2. Open Settings and then Security.
  3. Select Screen Lock.
  4. Configure one of the screen lock option.

Solution 2:-(For users)

  1. Install Google Apps Device Policy from Play Store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.enterprise.dmagent&hl=en_IN
  2. Open Google Apps Device Policy and activate your device
  3. Now open Google Classroom and try access again

Note: Installing Google Apps Device Policy allow G Suite admins to manage your phone settings and will give them the ability to even wipe your device. Ref: https://support.google.com/a/users/answer/9453213?hl=en

Solutions for IT Admins

If you are G Suite or IT administrator of the school, you can fix this issue for all your students by trying below solutions.

Solution 2:-(For G Suite Admins)

Enable Android Sync in G Suite admin console.

  1. Login to your Google Workspace Admin console as super admin
  2. Go to Devices
  3. Under Mobile and Endpoints, click Settings
  4. Select Universal Settings
  5. Select Android Sync, select “Allow work data to sync on Android devices.

Solution 3:-(For Google Workspace Admins)

If the above steps didn’t solve the issue, turn off password policy.

  1. Login to your Google Workspace Admin console as super admin
  2. Go to Devices
  3. Under Mobile and Endpoints, click Settings
  4. Select Universal Settings
  5. Under General, configure Password Requirements

Solution 4:-(For Google Workspace Admins)

If none of the above resolved the issue, try turning off mobile device management if it is enabled.

  1. Login to your Google Workspace Admin console as super admin
  2. Go to Devices
  3. Under Mobile and Endpoints, click Settings
  4. Select Universal Settings
  5. Under General, configure Mobile management

That’s it and Google Classroom will start working again on Android.

Note: The error can also occur due to Classroom App not turned on for the user OU.
